Woden Valley Youth Choir has become a valued part of the Canberra music scene since its inception in 1969 and has provided musicality, colour and dignified performance for many local events, as well as inter-State and overseas audiences.
Conducted by Alpha Gregory, the choir has a proud set of achievements. Every year a new piece of choral music is commissioned from an Australian composer. WVYC is the organiser and a regular contributor to Canberra’s Stage 88 Carols by Candlelight, has appeared at events such as the National Apology for Enforced Adoption and the Canberra Centenary Concert. It participates regularly in the Canberra International Music Festival and Voices in the Forest and recently participated in Opera Australia’s touring production of The Magic Flute.
WVYC is proud to be an organisation in which there are so many positive benefits for the members: the value of learning to sing with confidence, the value of friendships made both locally and overseas, the value of positive self-esteem, and the value of developing performance skills which will hold them in good stead for the rest of their lives. As performers, discerning consumers and supporters of art in the future, they will help mould a society that strongly values its culture. And their commitment to excellence will serve them well in all walks of life.
