John Yoon, Performing Choir Accompanist

John Yoon began studying piano at the age of 4, the majority of which he studied with Ann Thompson. He continued musical studies throughout his school years, playing horn and flute. He began studying at the ANU in 2009 and graduated in 2014 with BMus and LLB degrees, studying composition under Jim Cotter and Larry Sitsky. He has played with CYM’s Wind Symphony, James McCusker Orchestra, the Canberra Youth Orchestra and the National Capital Orchestra.

John has accompanied since 2006 when he was a student at Marist College Canberra. Among his favourite works was the Brahms F minor Clarinet Sonata and the Bernstein Clarinet Sonata. Apart from accompanying, John has been active in various musical fields in Canberra. He has directed the music for several local theatre productions including Free Rain’s production of Bernstein’s West Side Story. John conducted COPS in La Clemenza di Tito and was assistant musical director in Canberra Opera’s L’elisir d’amore. He has also directed several ensembles, such as the ABC Community Choir. John has performed in five Soundproof concerts, performing new works by composers studying at the ANU. John maintains an interest in choral and chamber music in Canberra.
